A History of Mansfield, Tanick & Cohen

The Firm was founded in 1989 by the merger of the law practices of Seymour J. Mansfield and Marshall H. Tanick. Practicing since 1969, Mr. Mansfield established his private law firm in Minneapolis in 1982, after serving as Executive Director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Services and the Minneapolis Legal Aid Society. He is known for his groundbreaking class action litigation and his advocacy in the areas of employment law and business litigation. Marshall Tanick, a former journalist and practicing attorney since 1974, is renowned for his advocacy in the areas of Constitutional Law, labor and employment, defamation, media law, civil litigation and appeals.

Earl H. Cohen, in practice since 1973, merged his business and transactional practice into the Firm in 1990. He chairs the Business Practice Group, which includes the corporate law, bankruptcy, real estate, and estate planning departments, and has served as the Firm's Chief Executive Officer since 1992. The name of the Firm changed to Mansfield, Tanick & Cohen, P.A., in 1998.  In 2002 the firm also moved to its new offices on the 17th floor of the U.S. Bank Plaza South (formerly the Pillsbury Center) in downtown Minneapolis.

More recently, Gregory M. Miller joined Mansfield, Tanick & Cohen as a director and shareholder of the Firm.  Mr. Miller's focus is real estate development, transactions, and litigation, as well as business organization.

Expansion Upward, Outward . . .

From 1989 to the present, the Firm has grown from 7 to over 20 attorneys, and from 12 employees to more than 50. Originally, the firm earned its reputation in the areas of class action litigation, media law, and employment law. Today, Mansfield, Tanick & Cohen is recognized far beyond Minnesota for its knowledgeable representation in general civil litigation, business transactions, real estate services, intellectual property law, and many niche practices ranging from pet law to sports and entertainment law.

Moreover, where the Firm originally served clients of the Twin Cities and Minnesota, our practice extends consulting, transaction, litigation and appellate services to clients throughout the United States and overseas.
