• Attorney Seymour J. Mansfield, a founder, director and executive committee member of The Fund for The Legal Aid Society, has successfully chaired the Fund's Steering Committee for the Jeremy Lane Lawyer Fellowship, in honor of Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance's recently retired, outstanding Executive Director for the last 30 years. Jerry Lane was honored at the May 5 Annual Fund Law Day Dinner, where the Fund proudly announced that it had raised over $218,000 to support lawyer fellows working in four different parts of MMLA for three years. To contribute, click Lane Fellowship. Seymour was Jerry's predecessor as MMLA's chief officer from 1978 to 1981, and was the Fund's 2009 honoree.

• Attorney Rick L. Petry, chair of Mansfield, Tanick & Cohen, PA's white collar crime department, has been retained to represent attorney M. Tayari Garrett in defense of constructive contempt of court claims. As reported in the Star Tribune ("In rare move, judge finds attorney in contempt"), Hennepin County District Court Judge William Howard issued an Order last week finding probable cause that Ms. Garrett was in contempt because she was unable to appear to represent a client at trial. Ms. Garrett produced documentation showing that she became ill and was hospitalized, but Judge Howard requested additional information regarding Ms. Garrett's whereabouts. Joe Friedberg, another prominent Twin Cities defense attorney, was reported in the Star Tribune as calling Judge Howard's contempt order "unprecedented." Mr. Petry and Ms. Garrett plan to challenge the Court's order.

• On May 17, 2011, attorneys Earl H. Cohen and Jeffrey C. O'Brien were presenters at a National Business Institute seminar entitled "Advanced LLC Issues." Mr. Cohen spoke on the topics of "Current Updates and Emerging Trends" and "Advanced Tax Issues for LLCs," and Mr. O'Brien spoke on the topics of "Understanding the World of Minority Rights and Fiduciary Obligations" and "Walking the Ethical Line."

• On May 25, 2011, attorney Jeffrey C. O'Brien served as co-presenter, along with Lymari J. Santana, Mack & Santana Law Offices (and Of Counsel to Mansfield Tanick & Cohen), for a Ramsey County Bar Association Family Law Section CLE dealing with real estate and divorce.
